Paul's Prayer: Spiritual Insight (Eph 1:17-19)

Original Prayer

I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers,

that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,

having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe.

Context (Old Covenant)

Pauline prayer (Eph 1:17-19), pure New Covenant: spiritual knowledge of the inheritance already given in Christ.

What it teaches

In the OT wisdom is sought and God's law shown as the way. Knowledge comes through instruction, experience and God's speaking.

Realization in the New Covenant

This prayer by Paul is pure New Covenant: he prays for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, enlightened eyes of the heart, and that you may know what hope and what power belong to you in Christ.

  • You do not need to earn these things, you need to recognize them.
  • They ARE already yours.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, thank You: You give me through Your Spirit wisdom and revelation. Enlighten the eyes of my heart. I recognize what my hope in Christ is and what Your power works in me. Amen.
