Paul's Prayer: Love with Discernment (Phil 1:9-11)

Original Prayer

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment,

so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Context (Old Covenant)

Pauline prayer (Phil 1:9-11), New Covenant: love that grows with wisdom and discernment.

What it teaches

In the OT prayer is for purity and sincerity. God tests the heart.

Realization in the New Covenant

Paul prays for love that grows but is not blind.

  • Love with knowledge and discernment (Phil 1:9).
  • This is New Covenant maturity: not accepting everything in the name of love but testing what really matters. The fruit of righteousness is produced THROUGH Jesus (Phil 1:11), not through your effort.

Prayer in the New Covenant

Father, in Christ let my love grow rich in knowledge and discernment. Strengthen me to test what is essential and to decide clearly. Let me live with integrity and bear fruit through Jesus Christ, to Your glory. Amen.
