What does it mean to be truly free?
Introduction: freedom begins not on the outside, but on the inside
Many speak of freedom. But what is it really? A state without rules? Independence? Autonomy? The freedom to "do anything"?
The New Covenant reveals a different, deeper dimension: freedom is not the absence of limits, but life in the light of truth.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:36
➡️ True freedom begins where you stop trying to save yourself, and let Christ live in you.
1. Freedom is: no longer driven
A free person no longer has to function, please or perform. They know:
- I am accepted.
- I am loved.
- I am no longer defined by my performance.
For freedom Christ has set us free.
Galatians 5:1
➡️ This freedom is no invitation to irresponsibility, but to inner peace.
Ask yourself: do I do things to be enough? Or because I am already fulfilled?
2. Freedom is: living without accusation
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1
➡️ If you are free, you hear the voice of accusation, but you no longer believe it.
Freedom means:
- You are no longer a slave of your past
- You no longer have to justify yourself
- You may let go, without losing
3. Freedom is: no longer dependent on the judgment of others
But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court ...
1 Corinthians 4:3-4
➡️ Paul was free, not unassailable, but inwardly independent.
How you recognize true freedom:
- You serve, but need no applause
- You hear criticism, but do not break from it
- You stay steadfast, even when others do not understand
4. Freedom is: making decisions without fear
A free person says yes, because they want to, not because they have to. A free person says no, without guilt.
For God gave us a spirit not of fear ...
2 Timothy 1:7
➡️ The Spirit of the New Covenant is not oppressive, but clear.
Freedom shows itself like this:
- You have peace with your decisions
- You can hold the course, even when others bail out
- You set others free, because you yourself are free
5. Freedom is: resting in Christ
And you have been brought to fullness in him ...
Colossians 2:10
➡️ True freedom means: I do not have to add anything. I may be. I may live.
In practice this means:
- You stop fighting for love, you receive it
- You end comparing, you live out of identity
- You walk with God, no longer fleeing from yourself
Closing thought: freedom is no goal, it is the fruit of the New Covenant
If you are in Christ, then freedom is not something you must achieve, but something you unpack. Step by step. Day by day.
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
2 Corinthians 3:17
➡️ True freedom frees you from yourself, so that you can be wholly yourself. In Christ. In love. In truth.
And that is the most beautiful thing there is.
