What to do when faith hurts?
Introduction: when faith presses, it is not because of God
In the New Covenant, everything has been given to us. Not partially, not conditionally, but fully in Christ. And yet many believers experience phases when they inwardly wrestle, are confused, spiritually exhausted. The pain often arises not because God is missing, but because our thinking has not yet fully arrived in the new.
Blessed be the God ... who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing ... in Christ.
Ephesians 1:3
➡️ What hurts is often not lack, but an inner mismatch between old expectation and new reality.
1. Faith hurts when we ask instead of take
In the Old Covenant believers asked, because the promise was still outstanding. In the New Covenant we receive from Christ, now.
Everything that serves life and godliness has been given to us ...
2 Peter 1:3
➡️ We ask for what we already have. And that produces inner tension, pain.
What helps:
- No longer pray as a petitioner, but give thanks as an heir.
- No longer hunger, but learn to take what has been given.
- Do not wait for a feeling, but take the Word in the Spirit as truth.
2. Pain arises through not understanding
Many struggle because they misunderstand God. They wait for answers, signs, intervention, and experience only silence. But the New Covenant does not function via visible reaction, but via position of faith.
So you are no longer a slave, but a son ...
Galatians 4:7
➡️ A son does not beg. He steps in. And if we keep thinking like a servant, we feel like strangers in God's house.
3. What helps when you stand in a spiritual conflict?
- Recognize that your pain often does not come from faith, but from a lack of truth.
- Do not look at what is missing, but at what is already in you (Christ in you!).
- Transform your "Why?" into "What is true?"
And you have been brought to fullness in him ...
Colossians 2:10
➡️ The struggle is often a cry for clarity of identity, not for God's nearness.
4. You may rethink, not fight harder
What hurts is often the contradiction between old conditioning and new nature:
- Law instead of grace
- Earning instead of receiving
- Waiting instead of walking
... be transformed by the renewal of your mind ...
Romans 12:2
➡️ Pain in faith is often a sign that your thinking needs an upgrade, not your prayer life.
Closing thought: the New Covenant also heals your understanding
Faith does not hurt because God is hiding, but because our heart still seeks him through old patterns.
But in Christ everything is finished. You no longer have to ask if you are worth it. You may know: you are an heir. You may take. You may go. You may live.
All things are yours ... and you are Christ's.
1 Corinthians 3:21-23
➡️ The pain gives way when truth is given room. And peace comes when you stop asking, and begin believing that you already have.
