How Do You Recognize Spiritual Maturity?

How do you recognize spiritual maturity?

Introduction: maturity is no title, but fruit

Spiritual maturity is no status one earns or works for. It is also not the result of many Bible studies or years in the church. In the New Covenant, maturity is a consequence of Christ taking shape within you, and you learning to live out of his fullness.

... until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

Ephesians 4:13

➡️ Maturity means: you live out of what already belongs to you, in Christ.

1. Maturity recognizes what has already been given

Immaturity constantly asks for what has long since been given. Maturity lives out of the full inheritance, thankfully, clearly and quietly.

Everything that serves life and godliness has been given to us ...

2 Peter 1:3

➡️ Whoever matures learns no longer to beg, but to give thanks, to take, to manage.

Marks of mature believers:

  • They are no longer dependent on moods
  • They live not out of circumstances, but out of identity
  • They expect nothing from the world, but everything from the Christ within them

2. Maturity shows itself in walk, not in knowledge

A mature person not only knows truth, they walk in it.

But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Hebrews 5:14

➡️ Maturity does not arise overnight, but through lived knowledge that holds up in everyday life.

Practical building of spiritual maturity:

  • Recognize: what is true about me in Christ?
  • Confess: I agree with God, against my old thinking
  • Act: I react differently, no longer driven, but led

3. Maturity contradicts the flesh, not the Spirit

Maturity shows itself especially when you do not react as you used to.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness ...

Galatians 5:22-23

➡️ These fruits are not your work, but expression of the maturity of Christ in you.

Maturity means:

  • You no longer confuse attacks with truth
  • You need no stage, you serve also in hiding
  • You no longer let bitterness grow, but consciously bless

4. Maturity accepts correction, and grows through it

... that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

Colossians 1:28

➡️ Maturity allows itself to be shaped, not offended.

Immaturity reacts with defense. Maturity asks: Lord, what do you want to show me?

True maturity has no fear of correction, for it lives not from pride, but from grace.

5. Maturity lives from sonship, not from duty

So you are no longer a slave, but a son ...

Galatians 4:7

➡️ The mature one is no longer concerned with position, recognition or "doing something for God." They live from the knowledge: I am in Christ. I have everything. I serve because I am free.

Maturity shows itself like this:

  • You serve without needing recognition
  • You stay silent, even when you are right
  • You give, without exploiting yourself
  • You let go, without losing

How do you reach out for maturity?

  • Eat truth daily: take the Word like food, not as a burden
  • Speak like an heir: no victim posture, no self-denial, but agreement with God's truth
  • Stay under spiritual guidance: let yourself be helped, even when you are already far along
  • Serve faithfully: even without a stage. Even without applause. Maturity loves the hidden
  • Examine yourself in love, not under pressure

I press on ... that I may make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

Philippians 3:12-14

➡️ Maturity grows when you let yourself be seized, and learn to seize what belongs to you.

Closing thought: maturity has a sound

Not loud, not blustered. But calm, certain, clear. Spiritual maturity is no goal, but a fruit of life out of the fullness of Christ.

Let us grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.

Ephesians 4:15

➡️ Maturity is when you show him, without highlighting yourself. Then the goal is reached.
