What if I doubt?
Coming home, why the New Covenant is what you long for
Introduction: the quiet question that never disappears
There is a question that goes deeper than any religion, any dogma, any disappointment: Where do I belong?
This question is not asked loudly, but it runs through the whole of life. It is there in moments when all doors stand open, and yet no one really knows you. It is there when you succeed, but have no one to celebrate with. When you laugh, but no one knows why you weep later.
1. Between doubt and longing
Maybe you've heard of God, but only in rules. Maybe you were told you must "first" ... "then" ... and "if only you ...", and then maybe you'll be loved.
Or you were open once. Sought. Prayed. And were disappointed. By people. By teachings. By cold rooms and empty promises.
The weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, the injured you have not bound up ... but with force and harshness you have ruled them ... and they wandered.
Ezekiel 34:4-6
➡️ Maybe you were such a sheep. And no one saw it.
But deep inside you ... there is still something. Something real. Something that does not give up. Something that draws.
2. This drawing, that is the New Covenant
The New Covenant is no contract. No membership. No rulebook.
I will put my law within them, and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Jeremiah 31:33
➡️ No compulsion. No "if, then." But: I will. I give. I come.
The New Covenant begins not with your decision, but with God's love. He saw you first. Before you sought.
But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
➡️ You are never too late. You were always in view.
3. The two thieves, what we have overlooked
Often we hear of the thief on the cross who did nothing and still came to paradise. And yes, he believed.
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!
Luke 23:42
Today you will be with me in paradise.
Luke 23:43
➡️ No deal. No calculation. But broken faith.
But Jesus also warns of another thief:
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
John 10:10
➡️ This thief is not primarily Satan, but every voice that confuses the heart with a false gospel. Everyone who mixes grace and law, who replaces the New Covenant with demand.
These voices rob us of peace. They speak of God, but without love. They quote Scripture, but without life. And you sense it. Deep inside. That restless feeling: "This is not the Jesus I am looking for ..."
➡️ That is the working of the thief: he robs the joy, the rest, the childlike certainty. But Jesus is different. Always.
4. I as the author: I have arrived.
I am not writing this as a philosopher. Not as a know-it-all. But as someone who himself has searched. Doubted. Suffered. Compared.
I have experienced religion, but received no answer. I have walked through systems, and found no home.
But then it came. No bang. No show. But this quiet, deep drawing. And I knew: this is it. This is real.
I no longer had to run. I no longer had to search. I had found, and the one I had found had long since called me.
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
Romans 8:16
➡️ I have this witness. And he does not stay silent.
5. How you arrive, without religion, but with heart
You do not have to memorize a prayer. You do not have to put on a spiritual show. You only have to become still, and say:
Jesus, I want to know if you are real. If you are who you say you are, show me your heart.
And you will see. Not maybe. Not someday. But now. For the New Covenant is not a contract. It is a home.
If anyone loves me ... we will come to him and make our home with him.
John 14:23
Closing thought: coming home
If you feel that you are too broken, too late, too full of questions, then listen:
➡️ You are exactly right.
The New Covenant is not for the strong. It is for those who realize they are alone. For those who want to love. To be real. To come home.
In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.
Isaiah 30:15
You are invited. Not on probation. Not for a time. But forever.
