1. Biblical foundation of baptism
Baptism is not a Christian add-on ritual, but an action instituted by God and clearly anchored in the New Covenant. It is the expression of faith, the seal of the covenant and spiritual reality all in one.
"Baptize them in the name ..." (Matthew 28:19-20), the command to baptize comes from Jesus himself. It is not an option, but a charge.
"Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved ..." (Mark 16:16), here faith and baptism are inseparably linked.
2. Spiritual dimension of baptism
Baptism is not primarily a symbol, but an act with spiritual effect. In baptism the following happens:
- The death of the old self (Romans 6:6)
- The burial of the past (Romans 6:4)
- The release from the power of sin (Romans 6:7)
- The resurrection into a new life in Christ (Romans 6:8)
➡️ Baptism is not a ritual for remembrance, it is participation in the cross, a sharing in Jesus' death and resurrection.
3. Practical side of baptism
- The biblical form of baptism is full immersion (Greek baptizó = to immerse completely).
- The biblical precondition is faith and turning (Acts 2:38).
- The biblical authority lies in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38; 10:48; 19:5).
Baptism is therefore:
- a conscious decision
- an act of obedience
- a public covenant step
4. God's thought behind baptism
God does not want us to believe in Jesus only theoretically. Baptism is his way to make faith visible and to anchor it spiritually so that it is effective.
➡️ It is the transition from the old creation to the new (2 Corinthians 5:17).
➡️ It is a sign of the covenant, like circumcision in Israel (Colossians 2:11-12).
➡️ It is a spiritual seal that binds us to the name of Jesus (Galatians 3:27).
Baptism ... now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience.
1 Peter 3:21
5. Summary
Baptism is no symbolic act, it is the gate to new life.
- Biblically grounded
- Spiritually effective
- Practically concrete
Whoever believes is baptized. Whoever is baptized visibly belongs to Jesus. Whoever is born of water and Spirit (John 3:5) no longer lives for himself, but in Christ.
