Thoughts within the New Covenant
We are God's children now. Not someday, not when we're good enough, now. John emphasizes this emphatically. At the same time he says: What we will be has not yet appeared. So there is both: a firm present and an open future.
The now is secured. You are a child of God. The tomorrow is exciting because God has prepared more than you can imagine. But you don't need to wait for tomorrow to be sure. Your identity stands now.
Today you are God's child. Completely. And the best is yet to come.
Truth & Application
Truth: You are God's child now, not once you have proven yourself. Your identity is present and real. At the same time, God has more for you that has yet to be revealed.
Today practically: Live today from the certainty of your sonship. Don't let doubts or feelings keep you from knowing who you are.
Question for you: Are you living today as God's child, or are you still waiting to become one?
Prayer
Father, thank you that I am your child right now. Not someday but today. I accept this identity and let go of doubt and insecurity. The best is yet to come, but even now I am held. Holy Spirit, make my sonship come alive in me today. Amen.
